{My Home} A Big Ol' Gallery Wall

I am always preaching to my friends, family, and clients about displaying photography as art in your home. What is more beautiful than images of your own family adorning the walls all over your house? But let's face it, we artists can talk a big game, but sometimes, when it comes to our own lives, we can let personal projects fall by the wayside.

So finally, with the help of some Pinterest inspiration, I pieced together my personal gallery. I actually had all of these frames lying around my house. Some I painted to give the gallery a more eclectic feel. I also wanted a few non-photo elements (you'll see those below). Then I had the agonizing task of deciding what photographs to use. I decided to use a mix of snapshots and pretty planned-out session shots. This wall was specifically for the four of us (other family members grace our hallway and tabletops), and I wanted to be sure we all made at least two appearances. I laid everything out on my living room floor, changing, moving, and perfecting until I was happy. And since it was blocking entry into the playroom, hubby decided to hang it that night!

So, after weeks of planning, this is what I came up with-

I decided to use a fun wooden 'H' that I painted cream to match the cream frames. The upper left squares are 6x6 canvases that I attached scrapbook paper to using homemade Modge Podge, aka, glue and water.

Since the wall is vaulted, I knew the gallery needed to be pretty tall, but I did leave room for expanding! Excuse the couch- I am trying to convince hubby that it is time to trade up!

I have been seeing so many adorable Valentine's Day shoots lately, mostly with sweet little ladies modeling gorgeous red and pink duds. I really wanted to do something with my kiddos and thought it would be a perfect time to experiment yet again! I didn't want to do anything too cliche, but knew it had to read "Valentines". I kept my props simple and just let the boys do what they do best- goof off!

So, I thought I hit "post" on this entry a LOOOONG time ago, but apparently not. So, like any good blogger, I'm going ahead and sharing it anyway, even if it is a month and half late!

I wanted a shot of my boys for our annual Christmas card. That was all. But being a photographer and all, it's never that simple. I picked out the perfect outfits for the look I wanted. Got all of my props in order and even found a cute little spot to shoot (a random field right behind a strip mall). I figured that after all this time and effort planning, I might as well shoot just a few more. But boys will be boys. It was chilly. Little'un was annoying Big'un. There were ant hills. There were very large sticks. But my boys are troopers. We actually got a few keepers (amongst a sea of cheesy smiles and eye rolls) and a few "precious" moments!

It just goes to show that kids run the show. And sometimes, that's ok with me!

Sometimes, the key is just letting them play for a few shots.

And just so you know that I'm telling the truth, here are a few, ahem, candid moments

And remember- kids smell fear. But if all else fails, embrace your childrens' "quirkiness"! You'll appreciate it come high school graduation time!

I think mine (and my kiddos') favorite holiday tradition is baking and decorating cookies! Every year, we break out the Christmas cookie cutters, flour, rolling pin, sprinkles, and icing and make a huge mess in our kitchen! They have a blast and it's the only time you'll see a mess in my kitchen AND a smile on my face!

(Please excuse the muddy photos- it has been raining non stop here for the last three days, so the kitchen was dark and a bit dreary)

I tried my hand at these last year, but made a few improvements this year. You can use so many different materials for these trees, but here are a few examples to get the juices flowing!

For mine at home, I used red and gold ribbon and for another, twine.

{Project Christmas} Christmas Framed

One of the cheapest Christmas decorations in our house is our framed Christmas cards. I hang onto a few of my favorite cards every year and the kids help me choose which ones get framed. I simply switch them out with my everyday photos! Cost- $0! Can't beat free!

{Project Christmas} Handmade Ornaments

I found this recipe online and thought it would be perfect for both my 4 year old and my 8 year old. It's called salt dough and it could not be easier to make!

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1/2 cup warm water

Mix together in a large bowl, then roll out as if you were going to make cutout cookies. I used a few of our Christmas cookie cutters and made a couple shapes that the boys could choose from. I poked a hole in the top of each with a chopstick for the ribbon to hang. They took about 3 days to completely dry out and harden.

After they were nice and dry, the boys used acrylic paint and glitter and went to town!

The final products hanging on our tree! I put their name and the year on the back with a Sharpie.

Super easy and the boys had a blast making their own personal ornament!

Little baby Kaydence, you were so cuddly and cute! I don't know what it is with these babies lately, but I am so jealous of the hair! My kids were bald till they were two!

Kaydence won our Halloween costume contest back in November. We waited just a few weeks until she hit that 4 month mark. I adore this age because their little personalities start to show and they can't run away from you yet!

We had a great time playing at the studio last week; they even brought along their dog for some fun! Thanks for coming to see me guys!

{Project Christmas} Red Velvet Minis

So, this project I "created" on my own. I LOVE red velvet cake, so I figured, hey, how fun would little bite-size cakes be? And thus became my Red Velvet Minis!

I just used regular old store-bought red velvet cake mix and scooped it into a mini muffin pan. I baked them according to the instructions, but cut the bake time by half. And of course, what's a red velvet cake without cream cheese frosting? Again, store bought cause I'm lazy. I have been nommin' on these all day and they'll most likely be gone by tonight.

I met this sweet family of photographers about 8 years ago- before they were actually a family! These two were college classmates of mine at Gwinnett Tech where we all studied photography. It wasn't until after we graduated that they finally began dating and the love they shared began to grow! I was pregnant with my youngest at their wedding a few years ago, and was thrilled when they had their first baby last November. Now that their sweet little bundle is now a rumblin', tumblin' toddler, it was time for family portraits!

I was honored to capture these memories for them! The weather looked ominous, but the light remained gorgeous as we shot almost till the sun went down.

What made you want to start a business?

Actually, my daughter and a couple friends urged me to sell my jewelry when they first saw my handcrafted designs. I had been making jewelry sets for birthdays and Christmas gifts for a few years and enjoyed bead collecting. It wasn't until my husband lost his job earlier this year that I seriously considered showcasing my creations online. By then, the time was right, and necessity being the mother of invention, I found myself eager to take this creative journey to the next level. Since then my custom orders have kept me busy while building my Etsy shop. I love playing with color palettes and textures, learning new techniques, and getting wonderful feedback that comes from happy customers.

What’s your favorite thing about owning your own business?

For me, it's really about flexibility and the opportunity to bless others through this creative process. Being able to work from home is the perfect scenario for me.

Any advice you’d give someone looking to turn their hobby into something more?

Pray about it. Listen to the voices that affirm your God-given talents and abilities, and move in the direction of your dreams. Those who know you and care about you, will speak truth into your life, encourage you, and nurture your creativity. Building a business is a lot of hard work, and sometimes lonely, so surround yourself with plenty support and look for opportunities.

What inspires you?

Beautiful photography, art, colorful fashion, music, and good writing. When I'm zapped of creative energy, I'm usually refreshed in the company of other artistic people, but I find inspiration everywhere.

Tell us about yourself, family, interests:

My husband and I are empty-nesters but we're blessed with a trio of granddaughters who keep us entertained and well loved. We enjoy craft shows and festivals, cookouts, a good movie now and then, drives to the countryside, and family get-togethers. I love to write, paint, dabble in mixed media art, and decorate cakes. My husband is a two-time cancer survivor who totally supports my "house of beads."

Where can we find you when you aren’t working?

Probably shopping for beads or having a sleepover with my granddaughters:-)

That would most definitely be organic dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt. ♥

My family has always been very supportive of my "little photo business". At the beginning, most thought of it as a fun hobby, but now, they are confident in referring to me as a pro. I love to do shoots for my family because we are so close and I feel like this is something I can give them from my heart.

My sister doesn't usually wait for me to offer- she asks- ok, tells me that I am her photographer (and let's face it, I'm not gonna turn her down!) I am always very flattered that she trusts me to capture my niece's newborns, first months, and now, her sweet little family! We ventured to a local park to find people camping on the site (ummm, huh?) but we were able to find a nice quiet area all to ourselves and had some fun!

Like I said on my Facebook, I ADORE this family! They are beautiful inside and out! I have known these guys since our high school days way back when and watched their relationship blossom! Save up and start with CASH! Start small – don’t try to take on the world and your biggest competitors all at once. Maintain a healthy balance of work and family. Pace yourself, find your niche and go for it!

What inspires you?

Everything around me! I find the colors just in nature inspire my best color combinations and designs – taking a walk around the block can really help get the creative juices flowing! Combine that with some good driving music and maybe a quick shopping trip to check out the latest styles and trends for the season, and I’m ready to get to work!

I’m married and a stay-at-home mom of two. My husband is my biggest supporter, and I couldn’t be more thankful for him being the love of my life! My children are an absolute joy! When I was younger, I never imagined having children and was solely focused on my career. Little did I know what God had in store for me! Let’s just say, I’m thankful He knows me better than I do, and I’m humbled at the most amazing life He has led me to! I am a member of First Baptist Church Woodstock. I enjoy singing and playing tennis.

{My Home} Beginnings of a Boys Gallery

Ok, so I am always telling my clients how to display their portraits that I thought you might want a glimpse into how I decorate with images in my own home.

Let's begin with the boys.

After almost 6 years in our house, I have decorated (ok, painted) every room in my house except 2- the laundry room, and my kids' room. So it was time to finally give their room a bit of personality, and Labor Day weekend, we tackled a few overdue projects. First, with the help of my 8 year old, I painted the room a pale blue-gray. Then my oh-so-handy hubby cut and hung a few shelves for their ever growing "stuff" collection. Looking at the vast blank wallspace between the two top shelves, I immediately envisioned a big old print of the two kiddos there. So, again with the neverending help of my 8 year old, we chose the perfect photo- one from our beach trip this past summer.

I chose to do a mounted 16x20 and set it in a glassless frame which was just collecting dust in my office. After a coat of blue paint, voila! The very first art piece for the boys!

{The Anti-Photographer}

Photography is very much subjective. As with all art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When we go to get "pictures made", we want to look our best. We want to look pretty, or handsome, or thin. We want a photo of the kids getting along, or mom kissing the baby just the way they saw in some advertisement. We want to look perfect. Just like that family on the wall at the mall photo studio. You want them to capture that special moment of your family too.

So why then, are big photo chains telling you that you aren't special- you are exactly the same as the family from their 12:00 session and will be the same as their 5:00 session. You will get the same 30 minutes, the same white, then blue, then black backdrop. You will be told to sit, then stand, then lean on your back shoulder while they tease your 4 year old with a feather duster trying to get him to look at the camera. (I am speaking from personal experience) Is there anything wrong with this? No, not neccessarily. But if you are like me, you hate being treated like a number. You hate being viewed as a walking checkbook.

Now, take a look at your family- your 3 year old, freckle faced cherub whose dirt stained cheeks are so common, you tell everyone they are birthmarks. Your little blond angel who refuses to wear anything without her pink rainboots and a tiara, cause let's face it- she IS a princess! Then there's your hubby (sorry guys- calling you out!) who never smiles the "good smile" when asked to.

Maybe I'm a rebel, but the photos I really cherish are the ones that show the real sides of my family. We are by no means "normal", nor do I care to be- and that's how I want my family to be captured. Exactly as we are. I have one actual "smiling" shot of my boys in the house- the others are either them being their goofy selves or looking away from the camera. It shows who they ARE, not who I want people to THINK they are.

You will never hear me say:
"Cheese!"
"She's just not working for me today!"
"Do you want to reschedule so we can get some posed smiling ones?"
"That tutu and jeans combo ain't doing it for me."
"Just wear white tops and khakis on everyone!"

Let's create a session that is styled and designed for YOU, not the masses. And if that kinda thing is your style, then I may not be the photographer for you, and that's fine. My feelings aren't hurt. I do get that magic shot where everyone is looking at the camera with a great big smile on their face- but it is never forced. They smile because they had so much fun during the rest of the session, they can't wipe them off their faces if they tried.

You recently made the decision to devote your talents exclusively to charities. How did you come to that decision?

The decision to take this route was not mine, but God's nudge on my heart. Through our tragedy of my husband's TBI, God has turned it into a blessing and has made our lives better because of it. I simply want to help anyone out there in need or in a tough spot.

What made you want to start a business?

I started my business because of my little princesses love of tutus. Ones online cost too much money, so I decided to try to do it myself. It just took off from there, I found something I love to do.

What’s your favorite thing about owning your own business?

I have owned my own business for over 10 years, I used to be a massage therapist. I love it! The flexibility to be with my family and do things I like do, makes it worth the while and my favorite things about owning my own business.

What inspires you?
My daughter! She is creative and loves dress up. She has ideas of what she wants for a tutu and I go from there.

Tell us about yourself, family, interests:
I am 36 and have lived in Loganville for about 2 1/2 years. I'm originally from Texas, but moved here from San Diego. My husband is a retired Marine of 20 years and we have 1 daughter, Kadence, who is 4. Kadence has two half sisters, Alex and Hanna. We love all the time we have to be with family. Our interest include- our Church, Graystone Church, again our family, and helping with VA military related issues. Actually, the yellow tutu shown is for a Facebook auction in mid October for, PTSD and TBI Awareness Ribbon, as my husband suffers from a TBI and my father PTSD both military related.

Where can we find you when you aren’t working?

At home or church with my family.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?
My guilty pleasure is probably watching Teen mom!

Where is your dream vacation spot?

Any hotel, it doesn't matter if its in the same city. There is just something about staying at a hotel. :)

{Treats with My Boys}

Many of my clients have been raving about a local bakery and sandwich shop in my area, so when I checked out their Facebook page, I was happy to see another small business involved in their community. I decided that since I actually had a weekend off, I would go have a taste of Parkside Bakery for myself! So the boys and I headed out for an after-lunch dessert, and we were not disappointed! Nolan chose a Spongebob cupcake and Reilly, a chocolate one of course!

I'm not sure what they liked better- the cupcakes or the fact that they could DRAW on the tables! We had stars, dinosaurs, snakes, and one looooong lizard!

I must admit, that while the boys were busy drawing, I snagged a few bites of each of their cupcakes! They were delish! We will be back very soon!

I met Cody at the Grayson Day Festival back in April where she and her business partner where showcasing their adorable accessories for Two Lollidots. While I admired their work, I passed along my business card and was on my merry way. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when Cody emails me that she is pregnant and would like to have me document it! Needless to say I was super stoked! We discussed and planned the session and she let me know that they were very laid back and preferred an urban backdrop with a photojournalistic style. I was happy to oblige, and with her hubby and spunky 3 year old, we turned our vision into a reality! I had a blast guys! Enjoy!

By the way- I have never had a session lend itself so well to black and white. They just seemed so much more powerful that way, so I went with it!

{The Digital File Dilemma}

Isn't technology grand? Anyone these days can buy themselves a digital camera, take wonderful photos of their kids and family, delete the ones they don't like, upload them to Facebook, email them, and print as many copies as their heart desires. It is amazing how far photography has come and how accessible it is to every mom, hobbiest, and nature lover. I love it when my friends and family invest in digital cameras- it means that they too can know the beauty and art of the photograph. Capture their everyday lives and be proud to display it! With editing software available to consumers, you can even play around with your images with some Photoshop skills.

While all these technologies are great, they remind professional photographers, like me, that consumer expectations have changed. With the onslaught of consumers buying pro camera equipment, we can't help but think that anyone with a big fancy camera is a professional. We trust that they have the skills necessary to capture beautiful images, edit them with a trained eye, and present a gorgeous piece of art that we proudly hang in our homes. Sadly, this is not the case.

It seems that everwhere you look, someone you know is now taking pictures for a living. Yes, I said "taking pictures". They will happily shoot whatever you need, then even more happily burn all of your photos onto a disc, because that's what you want, right? They may, in fact, be incredible photos- perfect lighting, exposure, and even great smile from your husband/wife. You LOVE them. You pay for your CD and that's that. Now what?

Scenario One- You receive your CD and immediately make plans to get them printed next weekend after your son's baseball game. Next weekend comes and the game goes into extra innings. By the time it's over, it's late- printing can wait till next week. Next week comes and you forget it's your husband's best friend's wedding. Being there reminds you that you must get your photos printed out so they can adorn the walls of your living room. 3 more weeks go by and where is the CD? Exactly the same place you left it- next to the computer, but now it is covered by bills, mail, and appointment reminder cards. Life happens. I KNOW- I live it everyday!

Scenario Two- You bring your CD home and immediately open them on your computer. They look great! You head up to the drugstore, Wal-Mart, whatever your printer of choice, and begin selecting photos and sizes. You know you want #13 as an 8x10 and #5 as an 11x14. You look at the 8x10 and notice a bunch of the image is getting chopped off. You order it anyway. You move on to the 11x14 and notice that when you resize it, the photo gets blurry. No worries, it's probably just the screen. You print them out and 1 hour later come back to find that your photos are not only chopped off and blurry, but seem to be a sickly green color. And shiny. You think back to the images you fell in love with on your computer and realize that these look nothing like what you saw.

Professional photography is so much more than pixels taken on a big, fancy

camera.

The main reason a good pro photographer does not just hand out digital files is that they lose control over their art. For instance- let's say you found a high-end bakery that makes the most beautiful cakes. You hire them to make a three-tiered creation for a baby shower. Instead of having them make it from scratch for you, you ask for the recipe cause, hey, you have the flour, milk, eggs, and icing at home, right?

When you hire a professional, you are paying for more than a product. You are paying for their expertise, training, equipment, and artistic eye. When they give up control, you are defeating the purpose of using a pro in the first place.

Ok, having said all that, I am NOT opposed to selling digital files. They do have their place. Let's look at it this way- you want all of the images because you are afraid you might want to use them at a later date. When is the last time you looked at unprinted photos from more than a year ago? Probably never. You choose the ones you love, print them and frame them. Same goes for your professional session. You may see 50 images, but you are really only drawn to 3 or 5. They speak to you. They say, "Print me huge and hang me on your wall!" (What? Photos don't speak to you?) The others are nice, but you can live without them.

I am in the business of helping my clients from start to finish. We pre-plan everything- from styling the session, picking out outfits, choosing the perfect location, and brainstorming ideas. Then, I personally edit each image so it is perfect before you ever lay eyes on it. I complete the experience by creating the perfect, finished image for your home. That's what you paid me for, right? My vision and ability to create custom art!

That's why I offer digital files only after you get yourself some amazing wall prints!

It seems silly to take all that time planning every detail of your session, only to have the photos trapped on a disc, never to see the light of day. You hired me to do the work, not for you to run around town printing and picking up photos. When a pro photographer prints your images for you, you can be sure that they will be edited to the perfect color and contrast, and stand the test of time by being printed on archival papers.

Do you have a location or are you exclusively online? We are primarily online but my "studio" is stocked so if someone local wants to make an appointment to shop in person, our door is always open. We also try to do local shows in the cooler weather (and when we have coverage for the kids)

Tell us about your product- Our hair candy is hand crafted, designed with multi-functional use in mind, and we like to offer everything from the classic to the trendy. We're expanding to include young adults and women by including jewelry and purse pretties. I pride myself in using high quality supplies and I'm always looking for the special or unique items to make our product stand out in a crowd!

What made you want to start a business? After buying several little hair clips for our first daughter, I said to myself, "I could make that!" Each item is always an experiment at first which turns into "perfection".

What’s your favorite thing about owning your own business? Being able to work at home and at my own pace. I love that my friends come to me for custom items for their children and for themselves. I recently made a filigree cuff bracelet with a mocha brown cameo for my best friend and I LOOOOVE how it came out.

What inspires you? God, Life, my Children

Tell us about yourself, family, interests: I'm a stay at home mom to three wonderful "babies". Our oldest, Alyson, just started kindergarten (boo hoo), Paul is in Pre-K, and Ella Jeanne is about to be 3. Not babies anymore I guess. My husband and I are native New Yorkers who moved to Georgia a few months after getting married in 2004. We also have 4 dogs, all rescued through various organizations via Petfinder.com. I love to cook and bake (as long as it's on the simple side), create when I have the time (which this year I will! 3 mornings a week with all 3 kids in school!), Zumba, Yoga, and a good laugh. I like to think of myself as perfectly imperfect. Life doesn't come with a set of instructions, so we embrace the "oops" moments that life throws at us.

Where can we find you when you aren’t working? with my husband and 3 kids at home or doing something fun, our church ( The Edge at Bethlehem First United Methodist Church)

Do you have any guilty pleasures? Lol, of course! Ice cream would be my number one guilty pleasure. It's always in the freezer. And I do actually enjoy watching Phineas and Ferb on Disney Channel. Oh...and shoes and purses. Love me some great shoes and purses.....but I'm usually wearing flip flops, crocs, or sneakers....go figure!

Where is your dream vacation spot? anywhere with a beach! I miss living on Long Island, NY because you could drive 30 minutes north or south and hit a beach!

First off- is that not one of the most beautiful names for a precious little baby girl? And this girl lives up to it! I met her Mommy when we worked together at a local elementary school. When I recieved an email from her a few months back, I was elated to hear that she had just had her first baby! We decided that, because of the baby's age, it would be best to wait until she was 3 months to do our session together. This is such a fun age because babies are just starting to become more alert and aware and most importantly- smiling and giggling! Ava was such a sweet girl and I fell in love with that head of spiky auburn hair and gorgeous brown eyes! After a while, we wore her out and were able to capture a few sleeping shots. After her cat nap, she got her second wind and we played a bit longer before we ended our session!

So, us photographers always seem to know the perfect gift for every occassion, so when my parents' anniversary started creeping up on the calendar, I knew exactly what I was going to get them. I was so excited since they'd never had their portraits done, but I think they had their reservations. Dad is always up for anything, but mom is like me. We prefer to be behind the camera capturing the action! She was a good sport and may I say, having an awesome hair day!

If you're like me, you look forward to an annual beach trip every summer. I love creating these memories for my children and try to capture them at every visit. Since I shoot portraits for a living, I sometimes find it difficult to be creative while trying to relax and forget about work for a week. I decided a few years ago that I wouldn't focus on getting posed photographs of my boys, but rather document them as they play and interact with the sand and surf. I am less stressed about getting "the shot" and they get to enjoy their time too instead of always posing for Mommy! I had the pleasure of photographing one of my favorite little kiddos again. He was back for his 9 month session and we decided to take this one outside! He has changed a lot since last time I saw him- moving around, standing, but he still has those squeezable baby cheeks! {Fun With Backlighting} My Boys

This session is long overdue, but this Spring has been a whirlwind of activities! Between my birthday, Easter, festival planning, a wedding, and First Communion, and random thundershowers, there was very little time for me to take my babies out for their spring pictures. I started brainstorming what I wanted during the dreary winter months while doing my daily blog surfing. I was inspired by a few "sunset sessions" and knew I wanted to try some backlighting techniques. So finally, I packed up the boys and a few props, and off we went to a random field near my parent's house. The grass was super high and I was afraid they might object, but to my delight, their eyes lit up as they began scouring the land for bugs and sticks. They did, however, refuse my request to go barefoot. I had pictured bare toes running through the field, but alas, I settled for stocking feet instead- and happy kiddos!

Little guy is on an apple kick right now, so I thought what better way to keep him happy with a prop!

It's always a huge compliment when a fellow photographer asks you to do a shoot for their family. Just as flattering is having a photog friend trust you enough to shoot their brother's wedding! I met Kati through my college buddy, Kristen. I don't do many weddings anymore, but was honored to be asked to shoot one for a collegue!

Kati and Matt chose to be married at The Farmhouse Inn at Hundred Acre Farm in beautiful Madison. I arrived and was greeted by rolling hills and a gorgeous farmhouse and my wheels immediately started turning! They incorporated the rustic scenery into their wedding elements, including the giant tree under which they exchanged their vows!

It's Mother's Day and I'm running around getting ready for my son's First Holy Communion party. In my family, it's tradition to have a big to do for this special event, and we are no exception! {The Importance of Photographs}

On our way home from the beach one year, my husband informed me that we would be taking a detour to the family farm. The "farm" is the house his father grew up in. No one lives there, family just uses it when they go hunting or are passing through. He suggested that we go and take some of the antique furniture out and bring it home with us. I, having a bad experience with this house in the past (let's just say it involved a 7 month pregnant woman, a mouse, and no one to hear me scream...) was not excited. Don't get me wrong, the idea of new stuff for our semi-new house was thrilling, but having to weave through a 70 year old house riddled with spider webs and rodents, was not.

While there, I decided it would be nice to snap a few shots. I knew the house was very important to my husband and thought it might be nice to have photos of it, especially since I had no intention of returning any time soon. Nothing fancy-

I snapped a quick one on the front porch:

And another of the whole house (which is now framed in both ours and my in-laws' living rooms):

Fast forward to this past August when my husband receives a call from his dad telling him that lightning had struck the house overnight and it had burned to the ground in less than half an hour. My mind immediately went to that summer. "Thank God we got most of the stuff out of there. Thank God no one was there that weekend. Thank God we have photos of the house."
Yes, there was a lot lost in the fire and my youngest son will never get the chance to see Pa's childhood home, but we do have the memories (no matter how traumatizing) and we do have the photographs.

Take time in your everyday to document life. It doesn't have to be a special event. Your child doesn't have to be doing something life changing. It doesn't even have to be taken with a fancy camera at the correct exposure with the perfect lighting. It just has to record the moment, show the personality, capture what's important to you.

{Grayson Day Festival}

I was so excited to be part of Grayson Day this year! This is a family event full of food, live music, and all kinds of vendors selling their wares. I was lucky enough to meet many really great people and talk to some other local small businesses. Everyone was so nice and it was truly a wonderful way to spend a Saturday promoting Hugghins Photography!

Here are a few shots of my booth- my very first! A special thanks goes out to my amazing husband for all his help and hard work building and setting up. We spent two weekends building the back two walls complete with braces. They turned out great and worked like a charm on the rocky terrain!

{Live, Laugh, Photograph} Finding the Light

This installment in the series will teach you a bit about how to use light. We learned in a previous post about how to use our camera to control the light, but how do we use that to our advantage? I never recommend using your pop up flash. Use it as a last resort only, but in this lesson, you'll learn how to avoid it in the first place.

This post will focus on finding available light. These are all simple snapshots that anyone can do.

First, and most obviously, shoot outdoors. If you can plan where to shoot, opt for outside where light is plentiful and surrounds your subject. Having said that, there can be too much of a good thing. You never want your subject facing direct, midday sun. Your result will be a squinty, shadowed face like this:

Instead, try and shoot 1 hour after sunrise (yeah right!) or one to two hours before sundown. In the summer, I shoot as late as 8:30pm. The light turns an orangy red and is simply to die for

If changing time of day is not an option, find a shady spot that still gets a bit of filtered sunlight

Or, try turning your subject around so that you are the one facing the sun. Not only will they not be squinting, but you will get a beautiful natural hair light

And just because the sun goes MIA, it doesn't mean you have to call it a day- clouds are nature's light diffusers. Shooting during a overcast day has many advantages, including being able to shoot wherever you want withour fear of harsh lighting. If you can, set your camera to the "cloudy" mode to counteract some of the blue cast

Ok, so let's pretend that shooting outdoors is not an option. What do you do then? Find that outside light! This is why God invented windows. I adore window light. There is something so classic about an image shot with window light spilling on a little one

Sometimes, you catch them at just the right moment and are able to use the light to illuminate their profile.

Another thing to keep in mind is to go where the light is. It may not be obvious from one perspective, so try moving around a bit. You might find that perfect shot

Here, I got down real low instead of shooting overhead. From this perspective, the light is falling across his sweet little face

Sometimes, you are forced to shoot with a window behind the subject. No problem, just make sure you are exposing for the subject, not the window. In this case, there is a huge window behind the boys, but it fills the entire room with light, so there is enough to illuminate their faces while creating a gorgeous effect behind them

You can even use artificial light when needed. Here, I used our fluorescent kitchen light by changing my settings to color balance the green light. (If you can't do this, you can always change it to a black and white in a pinch)

Here, the only light in the room was our living room lamp.

Not sure if the light you are using will be good light? Check your subject's eyes. Those little flecks of light, known as catch lights, give life to your subject. You also want to make sure your subject is facing the light source.

So let's turn him around 180 degrees, shall we? See the difference?

So now you know a few tricks to help you next time you are caught in less than ideal shooting situations! Try experimenting with the light around your house, you'd be surprised at the types of images you can create!

When my good friend, Adam, called me up a little while back and asked me to shoot some headshots for him, I was happy to oblige. He is a chiropractor and needed corporate-y headshots, not sittin' on the railroad tracks cause I'm puttin' out an album headshots. He knew they weren't my favorite thing to shoot, so, in classic Adam style, he allowed me to capture some more "realistic" shots of him. Pretty soon, we were both acting like idiots and making what could have been an uninspired shoot into a pretty hilarious Saturday afternoon. It goes to show you that when you photograph people, it really is all fun and games!

We are so concerned with perserving the memories of our little ones/families that we neglect capturing moments of ourselves, which are just as precious. Well, I have the solution!

These sessions are perfect because they aren't long enough for mom to feel like she's neglecting her work as the family photog, but will still capture her, right now, with the joys of her life. This is for mamas with babies and mamas with grown children who have babies of their own. What a special gift to give to the mama in your life!

{Design Inspiration} Ten June

If you have read the "About Ashley" section, you would discover that I am in love with all things pretty. I never used to be this way- personally, I blame my uber trendy girlfriends. One of my new favorite hobbies is cruising the world of design blogs. As an artist, I often look to different mediums for inspiration. I am borderline obsessed with HGTV. I have stacks of Pottery Barn catalogues from three years ago and flip through them on a regular basis. The colors, the patterns, the textures all inspire me in my photography. I usually have "Divine Design" on in the backround while I edit sessions!

When I came across a new design blog, I was so excited because not only does Michelle have an awesome sense of style, but her and her hubby have renovated almost every room in their sweet little 1950's ranch home. On their own. Oh, and while they both play the 9 to 5 during the week! Wow!

Michelle and I have lots in common- we went to the same high school, graduated in the same class, married our high school sweethearts, and were both interior designers in a former life.

Here is one of my favorite DIY projects she shares on her blog, probably because it involves not only photography, but also pretty paper. Add some oreo ice cream and she'd be my hero!

DIY Picture Frame

One of the main reasons that David and I headed down to south Georgia last weekend was to move my youngest sister, Callie, into her dorm at Georgia Southern University. Whether I'm ready to believe it or not, my baby sister is a freshman in college! We loaded up her dorm room gear (which includes anything black, white or hot pink), packed her some Ramen noodles and Easy Mac, and drug along our will to move her into a fourth floor dorm room in sweltering south Georgia heat.

And of course I was super excited about the opportunity to help decorate a blank slate of a room! And in thinking about how I could help add to the room, I realized that I felt a DIY project coming on.... I wanted to give Callie something sentimental but fun, so I settled on a photo collage. The only thing I knew in starting this little project was that everything just HAD to be black, white, or hot pink. I have to admit, working with these colors was kind of fun considering there's not an ounce of hot pink in my house!

Back to the project. I picked up a 50% off basic black frame (no backing or glass) at Hobby Lobby. I drilled several holes in the side of the frame (ok, you caught me again, David drilled the holes) to place several screws. I (ahem, David) then wrapped picture framing wire around the screws across the length of the frame. Like so:

Then comes the fun part. I went to a few different craft stores and picked out some fun scrapbook paper.

And let me tell you, these funky, girly patterns are RIGHT up my sweet little sister's alley! And, duh... black, white and hot pink!

Then I got the pleasure of sorting through a bunch of our old pictures. I wanted some recent shots, some old shots, and a few non-photograph items. Callie loves anything with her initials on them and anything girly. So I pulled a random assortment, including some of the following.

A shot of our family cocker spaniel, Charlie (otherwise known as Chuckles, Chud, St. Charles Sebastian, or sometimes just Dog):

And while Callie obviously knows the recipe, I thought I'd throw in a handwritten copy of a family favorite- Saturday morning french toast:

And a picture of me and my wee little sisters with my dad, many years ago (and yes, that is me rocking the "all denim" outfit, you can be jealous):

With that said, I had to get the pictures, etc. to attach to the frame, so I decided to paint some basic tiny clothespins that I picked up from Walmart for $1.88. Before the paint, the clothespins looked kind of like this:

But, obviously, the natural wood is not black, white or hot pink, so I spray painted them a glossy black. Needless to say, here's the final product:

You can see I added the pictures, her initials (the CFG is chipboard from the scrapbook department and I picked up the "C" button from the fabric department at Michaels), a sweet little satin fabric hot pink flower, and all of the fun scrapbook paper (how cool is that black glitter paper!). I also wrote some special, personal messages on the back of the frame with a paint pen (a Bible verse, a favorite quote, and a few words about how PROUD I am of my little sis!) which added even more personalization to the gift. And yes, the picture of Callie with a Burger King paper bag on her head is definitely a silly inside joke that has lasted about ten years now!!

The presentation to her was certainly filled with a lot of tears and laughter-- I sure did get my sentimental moment! My family was there when I gave it to her, so it was very special to share the entire project with everyone! Here are me and my beautiful sister with the frame once we got it hanging in her dorm room (please ignore the fact that we are ~~slightly~~ very sweaty!):

Don't worry, I've got another version going (which is slightly less black, white and hot pink and more neutral and earthy toned!) for our living room as well! I'll share that next week! Have you guys made any fun DIY wall art lately?!

{Journaling Memories}

As the mom of two very energetic and hilarious little boys, you can imagine the types

of things that come out of their mouths on a daily basis. Some of it adorable (singing

the "Thomas" theme song from the backseat), some of it a bit annoying ("Mommy, shush, calm down!"), and some of it downright embarrassing ("How the hell are ya?" to the next door neighbor). Kids are just naturally awesome. They say and do things without any regard to whether it's socially acceptable. They pick their nose in public. They pair tutus with jean shorts. They repeat your "colorful" language to the grocery store manager.

I'll admit, I cringe everytime my eight year old tells someone, "Let me tell you a funny story..." I never know what will follow. But I do know that those moments are ticking down. There will come a day when my kids gain a conscience and begin to care what people think. They will become shy pre-teens, aware of social norms and rules. So while I'm living among

senseless knock-knock jokes and a three year old who randomly goes into "dinosaur mode", I make sure that I jot down all of the quirky sayings and other fun stuff that comes with raising kiddos-

When my first son turned one, I bought a small journal that I could record all of

his toddler milestones in. Some entries are paragraphs, others simply one-liners and random

details of his life. Nothing fancy, just things I wanted to make sure I would never forget. As

he got older, he developed quite a sense of humor (from me of course) and would spout

out some real doozies. Everytime, I would write them down in his book, and I can look back and laugh at how awesomely hilarious he was at only 3 and now, I can share the book with him. He loves to see what he was like at his brother's age! Now my younger son has begun to think that he is a young Adam Sandler and his book is quickly filling with "Nolanisms".

Even if your kids are older, you can still benefit from recording random comments and

good jokes. I cherish these memories and love being able to share them with my boys. On bad days, I flip through my books and they never fail to change my mood!

{What You Do For Some} | Gwinnett County Portrait Photographer

My mother is a stickler for making things fair. She had three kids, so her life was filled

with, "But she has one!" and "If he can, why can't I?" She always made sure that

what she did for some, she did for all. I wanted to do the same with my kids- mini personal

photo albums of their first 3 years, their own scrapbooks, and for my mom, a small

collage of each of my boys when they were around 4 months.

I was just starting photography school when my oldest was born and let's just say, he got used to the camera pretty quickly. These were shot on black and white film with a Pentax camera my mom and dad had just given me for Christmas. Check out the blanket "backdrop"!

We continued the tradition with my little guy, mostly because my mother didn't want him

to think she loved my oldest more than him, but I was happy to oblige.

And now, with the addition of a granddaughter, did you really think I'd get away scott free?
She came to visit me, so naturally, we turned babysitting into a photoshoot!

I love seeing not only the three grandbabies on her wall, but the progression of my

photography since the beginning. Hard to believe it's been eight years since I began my journey! I hope that more adorable faces will be added to "Mimi's" wall in the near future!

{Jason and Sara} Engagements | Gwinnett County Portrait Photographer

I was so excited when I heard that Jason was getting married. My husband and I have known Jason since high school and the two were roomies at UGA. I was delighted when his fiance, Sara, contacted me to do some engagements before the big day- she had so many ideas and our styles blended perfectly! So me and the hubs met them on the Georgia campus and spent the whole afternoon walking down memory lane and introducing Sara to all of the beauty of Athens! We ended our trip with a great dinner, catching up and getting to know Sara a bit better. You guys were great and I can't wait till the wedding!

Katy's family and I go way back. I watched her grow from a wee little thing to the

beautiful, caring, and smart young lady she is now. I get to see her even more now that

she helps teach my son's religious class and I am so happy to see her preparing

my baby for his First Communion in May!

I usually get so booked up with little 'uns, that I hardly get to photograph seniors-

but I simply adore them!
